He was educated at Makerere University and the University of Leeds. Earlier Professor of African American World Studies, Nazareth retired in 2021 as Professor of English at the University of Iowa in the United States, where he also worked as Advisor to the International Writing Program. His literary criticism has been enriched by his trenchant observations of the literatures of diverse global migrants, spanning Asian, Caribbean, and Black American cultures and histories. He traces his roots to the Goan village of Moira (Bardez).
