Sappho – σαπφώ : Fragments – αποσπάσματα

Description

Sappho, born on the Aegean island of Lesbos around 630 BC, is considered the greatest poet of Hellenic antiquity, the tenth Muse. Her work, in nine papyrus rolls preserved in the Great Library of Alexandria, was lost and only a small part of her compositions, in fragmentary condition, have come down to us. To date, Sappho’s complete poems amount to a handful. The fragments of the other compositions must be restored by scholars who master the Aeolian dialect in which Sappho wrote, formulating conjectures to fill the gaps in the fragments in order to give them meaningful contents.This book contains precisely the Author’s personal contribution of new conjectures for many of the fragments, such as to offer the reader different contents—possibly closer to the original text.The reader can find Galanis’s conjectures in curly brackets {}, both in the Ancient Greek and Modern Greek texts, as well as in the English translation.

Σπούδασε στο Ιεροδιδασκαλείο Βελλάς και στη Φιλοσοφική Σχολή Ιωαννίνων και έλαβε πτυχίο Παιδαγωγικής Ακαδημείας και Κλασσικής Φιλολογίας, αρχαίας ελληνικής και λατινικής λογοτεχνίας. Εργάστηκε στη Μέση Εκπαίδευση [΄Αργος, Μόναχο Γερμανίας και Ναύπλιο]. Μια εργασία του με θέμα την “Απολογία Σωκράτους” του Πλάτωνα δημοσίευσαν οι εκδόσεις Γρηγόρη. Επιφυλλίδες του έχει επίσης δημοσιεύσει ο τύπος της περιοχής του. Αγαπημένη του ενασχόληση είναι σήμερα να μεταφράζ ει κυρίως ποιήματα στα νεοελληνικά και αγγλικά. Ο Fabrizio Frosini μεταφράζει την αγγλική του μετάφραση στα ιταλικά εργαζόμενος μαζί του για τον έλεγχο της ακρίβειας και της πιστότητας. Το έργο αυτό-τρίγλωσση μετάφραση-μπορεί σύντομα να δει το φως της δημοσιότητας. Ο Δημήτριος Γαλάνης ζει στο Ναύπλιο με τη σύζυγό του. ΄Εχουν μια κόρη κι ένα γιο με τέσσερα εγγονάκια.~*~— Born on 7th Aug 1945 in the mountainous village Patero, half a day’s walk –at that time– from Ioannina, in north-west Hellada [Greece]. Graduated from Vella’s Academy with a degree in Pedagogy, and from the Philosophical School of the University of Ioannina with a degree in classical literature [ancient Greek and Latin]. He has been a high school teacher in Argos, Munich and Nafplio. A work of his on Plato’s ‘Apology of Socrates’ was published by Gregory’s editions. In the seventies and eighties several of his feuilletons and articles were also edited in local press. His main entertainment, along with writing poems, is to translate into neo-Hellenic and English. Galanis’s poetry (in Greek and English mostly, as well as his translations into neo-Hellenic and English) can be read on the web-site poemhunter.com/dimitrios-galanis. By the time being he has finished translating what saved from Sappho’s poetry into neo-Hellenic and English. Frosini is working together with him to translate his English version into an accurate and faithful Italian version. Τhis work –as a three language edition– may soon see the light of publication. He is currently living in Nafplio (Peloponnesos, Hellada) with his wife. They have a daughter and a son, and four grandchildren.
